Okinawa Japanese and American memorials

Okinawa Japanese and American memorials

In the closing days of World War Two from April to June, 1945 a fierce battle took place on the Japanese island of Okinawa.  More than 12,000 Americans and more than 110,000 Japanese died.

While visiting Okinawa, a Japanese friend drove us to a memorial on the island.  It is a memorial commemorating those who died during that battle, both Japanese and Americans.

The gentleman who drove us to the memorial his grandfather died in the battle for Iwo Jima.  He drove us to the memorial and unfurled an American flag at the site.
